Meet Maggie Poovey

Choosing a counselor is a big step. You want them to know what they are doing so they can actually help you but you also want them to be someone you can relate to. While we do introduce our therapists on our website, we thought it would also be helpful to provide some additional information about them in the form of a blog so that clients can get to know the counselor even better and know they are making a good choice before they ever step into (or log into) the first counseling session. This one is written by Maggie, about Maggie because who else would know her better? We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy her!

Hello! My name is Maggie Poovey and I am a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the state of North Carolina. I understand that starting therapy can cause anxiety and maybe be a bit overwhelming. This may be the first time you’ve really opened up and talked about your feelings and it will be with a complete stranger. You may be wondering things like, “do they care? Is this worth it? How is this going to help?”.  Well, I decided to write a little about why I care and how I can help to hopefully make the process a little easier for my clients and make myself more relatable.

Helping others is something that has been engrained in me from a young age and I am passionate about it. My mother has been a social worker most of my life and my father is a teacher. We always participated in fundraising and volunteering to help those in need, and I knew when it was time to choose my job, I wanted a career that would allow me to help other people. I initially began my college career in pre-med and I was interested in psychology as well, so I minored in neuroscience. Being on my own and away from my family took a toll on me and I sought out counseling of my own. My experience with my own counselor made me realize that making others feel heard and understood was the way I wanted to help others. This led me to transition to a major in psychology with the intent of becoming a therapist in the future.

I work hard to make sure that a counseling experience with me makes my clients feel validated and understood. I tailor my treatment and interventions to each individual client in an attempt to help them make positive changes in their lives in the best way for them. My approach to counseling is strengths-based. This means I focus on empowering my clients for the strengths that they possess and help them use those strengths to improve their mental health. I want to empower my clients and make them feel that they can solve their problems on their own using their strengths as tools.

As for my personal life, I am happily married and my husband and I will be celebrating 11 years together soon. He has been a major support in my career and in my life in general. We have one beautiful daughter that takes up most of our free time, but we love spending as much time with her as possible. When I am not spending time with my family, I like to draw, journal, bake, and read. I hope this little bit about me has made me more relatable and explained a little about what therapy with me will be like.
