What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is a very unique and well researched therapy that is aimed at and proven effective to help clients overcome their past traumas. Trauma can mean a variety of things and ultimately is any event that has caused negative emotions or thoughts that have stuck with you (for more explanation on this, check out our speciality page for trauma and PTSD). EMDR is focused on helping people process their trauma in order to get rid of unhelpful behaviors and thoughts that impact their everyday lives.

How does EMDR work?

If you and your therapist decide to utilize EMDR, your therapist will explain EMDR more fully, but to give you an idea of how it works, imagine a linen closet. Optimally, our brain would look like a perfectly organized linen closet. All our memories would be neatly stored in a part of our brain called the neocortex (long-term memory storage). You could think back on your memories and remember events without having strong emotions or thoughts coming up and put them back when you were done. However, we all have trauma. Therefore, our brains look more like the linen closet that things fall out of when you open. Those memories that fall out are the traumatic ones that our brain never stored correctly. In order to store them correctly, we can use something called bilateral stimulation that alternates activating the two hemispheres of the brain. This encourages your brain to process the traumatic memories by promoting the connections for healing and shifts how memories are stored. This can be done through eye movement, tactile stimulation, and audio stimulation.

Is EMDR a good fit for you?

In addition to EMDR being a good fit for people who experience the conditions above, it is also a good fit for individuals who suffer from triggers. What does this mean? Do you have emotions so strong in response to certain situations that you or others believe that they are excessive? Do you tend to act in ways that are not typical for you when particular events or thoughts come up? Do you have negative/unhelpful thoughts about yourself, others, or the world in general that others would tell you are not true? If so, EMDR could be a good fit for you.
