You feel broken

Life changed, and not for the better. You feel the change in your body. It hurts deep inside and the ache won’t go away. Sometimes you are able ignore the hurt but inevitably, something reminds you of what happened and it comes back with force. You may also have periods of time where you feel nothing. Life feels unreal now and you feel like you are floating through life. On the positive side, you don’t feel the pain, but you also don’t feel positive emotions like hope, joy, or peace. You wonder if you will ever feel normal again, that is if you remember what that feels like. . .

Your emotions are unpredictable

In the beginning, the loss is all you can think about. It is all-consuming and there are many crying spells. Then overtime, you realize you have to keep it together to function. So you do, until you can’t. Out of seemingly nowhere, emotions slip out again. You find yourself sobbing, getting into arguments, acting out of anger, having a whirlwind of thoughts, or falling into a state of panic. What’s worse is you feel out of control.

You feel like you should be better by now

You’ve heard the “it’ll be okay”, “chin up”, and other comments too many times. People say that the pain will subside and a lesson or something positive will come out of this experience. You aren’t sure they’re right. Surely if it was going to get better, it would have by now, right? Things don’t seem to be getting easier, and sometimes they even feel harder than they were when it first happened. You just want to feel whole again.

You want to know why

You had an idea of what you wanted life to look like, but now it doesn’t. It’s not fair. It’s not fun. It just stinks. But WHY? Whether you are wondering why me or why at all, you feel stuck in that part of the process. You feel like you can’t heal and get past this if you can’t understand why it happened in the first place. You are questioning yourself and your beliefs. You are also wondering how you are supposed to move on. It feels unsettling and confusing. You need help navigating this difficult time to feel better.

We can help!

Grief is a part of life that we all will have to cope with at one point or another. While many people think of grief as it relates to death, grief actually can be experienced anytime we have a situation that goes differently than we hoped or imagined. This could be the death of a loved one or pet. However, it can also be a relationship that ends, not getting into your dream college, finding out something difficult you didn’t know before, preforming poorly at something important to you, or so many other things. Grief is also natural. If we listen to our bodies and allow it to do what it needs, it will run its course. However, many people have a hard time doing this and get stuck.

We can help you get unstuck by helping you alleviate the symptoms, face the grief head-on in a safe environment, gather meaning out of the experience, and make a plan for moving forward with the grief. Grief is not something we should expect to “get over,” but rather find a way to integrate it into our stories. This takes away its power in your life and helps us grow as individuals. Want more information on how we do this? Check out our approaches including CBT, DBT, SFBT, EMDR, & BSP.
