Counseling Student Internship

Job Description

Here at Equalize Counseling & Consulting, we aim to be different in many ways. One of those ways is by setting clear expectations for applicants. We want to find individuals who will not only be able to complete the necessary job functions, but also fit well into the mission and dynamics of the team, in order to provide the best possible care for clients. Additionally, we want to speak into the culture and work environment future employees can expect. So, our job descriptions are in a narrative form that is utilized to draw in (and hopefully inspire) applicants who feel a connection to the storyline presented.

You are a graduate student in your final stages of your Master’s degree in professional counseling or marriage and family counseling. You have loved learning more about the profession, and the practicing through classes (although maybe a little nerve-wracking) have made you even more sure that you want to do this. Now it is time to figure out where you want to intern to learn more and develop yourself as a counselor.

You ideally want to work in private practice one day. You want an environment where you can grow. In order to do this, you need an internship site that allows you to not “know it all” while receiving guidance and training. You want help mastering some of the standards of the profession, such as completing client charts, but you also want to learn about some specialities that interest you, like DBT or EMDR.

You desire to not just complete the basic requirements for your master’s degree but be challenged into actually learning how to be an effective counselor. You desire to have a team and a supervisor who push you out of your comfort zone (in a good way) to learn new things and try them out. You like the idea of feeling prepared to walk straight out of internship and into the field without those pesky imposter feelings.

As a person, you consider yourself to be ethical, responsible, timely, trainable, and a great communicator. You also enjoy learning about the profession and related fields through reading books, listening to podcasts, watching shows, taking continuing education, etc. In short, being a mental health professional is not just a way to make money for you, but you are also engaged and driven in your growth as a counselor to see an improvement in client outcomes.
